Postpartum Skin Care + Holiday Gifting with Lauren of Behrhaus

One of my favorite things that have come out of creating Shugie, is being connected with really special people in the postpartum health and wellness space. I’ve noticed there is a growing community dedicated to the health of mothers and I’m so grateful to connect with them. And Lauren is DOING IT! She is a celebrity esthetician, health coach, RYT200, and the founder of Behrhaus, an online store curating clean, organic, and sustainable essentials for mamas and littles.

We hit it off right away talking about all things self-care following the birth of a babe and I am SO excited to get her advice on postpartum skincare and her top picks for gifting this holiday season.

So, without waiting any longer – let’s welcome Lauren to the blog!

Hi Lauren, So excited to have you! Thank you for being here. Can you tell Shugie readers a little bit about your journey and how you got to where you are today?

Hi Kaitlin, thank you so much for having me! It’s been so nice to connect with you and I love all of the information you’re sharing at Shugie!

I usually say my journey started when I was about 10 years old making “skincare potions” and clogging the drain..  When I was 14, I started sneaking and using my mother’s “anti-wrinkle” cream.. I’ve always been obsessed with skin! I worked as a celebrity aesthetician for over a decade in NYC  and I still take virtual appointments. In Dec of 2019, I became a mother and quickly began to see the lack of resources available to pregnant and postpartum mothers. Shocked and isolated I knew everything I had learned was guiding me into this direction—-being an advocate for change by uncovering an alternative way of care. How could I deliver care for mothers at home (during a pandemic)?  Opening an online market simplifying self-care for mothers and carrying sustainable essentials for baby. BEHRHAUS was born! Every product is carefully vetted, and stands up to a long list of BEHRHAUS BANS making sure the products are free of phthalates, bpa, bps, phenoxyethanol, and more!

Can you share with us the changes our skin goes through when we are postpartum?

The hormonal shift during postpartum is unlike any other hormonal swing after giving birth. Estrogen and progesterone drop drastically and it is absolutely normal to experience a number of changes from dry skin, redness/inflammation, acne, spider veins, and more. With that, I always say to give yourself grace, understanding, and time. I remember the first few days after having my son it felt like it was the first time I wasn’t thinking about my skin and my beloved skincare routine. I had my baby and my body to get to know and heal.

What are the top 3 ways we can support our skin/skincare routine postpartum?

– hydrate!! Your entire body requires water! Your skin is the last to get it! Staying hydrated is key! Especially if you’re breastfeeding! I like coconut water or adding tinctures to water for an extra boost!

– gut health and skin are interconnected. Paying attention to what you’re eating and how your skin reacts is similar to watching a discussion between your body! It’s a beautiful thing! Food rich in beta carotene is amazing for skin; squash, carrots.

Broth is also a great source of nutrients and easy to consume postpartum.

– Use products with purpose! Your skincare routine doesn’t have to be 10 steps, and let’s face it who has time for that with a little one.. Less is more and what’s even better is using products that support your skin and skin goals. I talk about this a lot with clients and they end up seeing the results they want when their routine is focused on their goals and concerns!

I always talk about how swollen, puffy, and dry my skin has felt postpartum. Is this common? For those of us that relate – How can we depuff and manage bloat? I miss my glowy skin!

Yes! It is, and I like to add it to the list of things people rarely talk about so thank you for bringing this up! The Postpartum body is experiencing so many changes it is absolutely normal to feel and see puffiness and have your skin experience textural changes.  The good news is that your glowing skin will return and there are also ways to expedite the process!

Stimulate circulation! We do that with our weighted Gua Sha. Made of 100% Stainless Steel it’s naturally cooling and instantly reduces puffiness. I say it’s weighted because it’s .5lb and is a sturdy tool you can use on your entire body for lymphatic drainage, stimulating circulation and blood flow. This will also help with balancing your skin tone and bring back your glow!

What are your top picks for holiday gifting this year for mamas or mamas-to-be?

Gift Sets: I really love gifting experiences! This year we curated two self-care kits to give you an opportunity to indulge in self-love this holiday season

1 – Sculpting Set which includes our Weighted Stainless Steel Gua Sha and Nutu’s Organic Moringa Seed Oil.

2 – Holiday Spa Kit: an at-home spa experience using 5 sustainable products! Creating this kit was very special for me. I really tried to tap into the senses but also make it meaningful without the fluff. When time rarely feels like it’s on your side I wanted to make sure each product held intention and delivered a grounding experience.

3 – Candles! Always a go-to for a host, gift exchange, or really anyone! We have a great selection of coconut and soy wax candles. Lead and phthalate-free. Hand-poured in Brooklyn, Indiana, and California and in reusable glass jars and tumblers.
